What were you thinking Wizards of the Coast?
To be clear, there are exacting details in the neck, arms, background, and hand which show clear copied structures from my art. Copied and pasted. This is not about 'similarities' , this is about direct copying.

Somehow the Trouble in Pairs situation has gotten even worse.
It seems the Male figure's face was entirely copied over from a Will Hulsey Trapped magazine cover, while the body, neck & left arm come directly from a Boris Vallejo illustration.

We've heard questions on the integrity of the art on the card Trouble in Pairs from the Murders at Karlov Manor Commander set, and we had questions, too. As we have looked into this further, we're now suspending future work with Fay Dalton.

"Cyberman" Doctor Who Universe token. A tie in with Magic the Gathering and the BBC. I had the heads up this was happening and requested a Cyberman, one of my favourite robots of all time!
I was asked to have it firing it's weapon directly at camera and all was approved. But in the end it needed a modification (as it appears on the card) I was just going on holiday so it was tweaked in house at WOTC. I'm quite proud of this one and here is the Drawing, Colour sketch and my original final.

The brief - "Introduce us to Harold, [...] He holds a glowing staff with a sci-fi looking MICROPHONE on the end. Show him SINGING into the microphone, sustaining a high note and making a grand gesture to punctuate the moment like a seasoned professional."

I instantly thought of my favorite front man ever. Freddie Mercury of Queen. I could go on and on about Freddie, but his very theatric style on stage was perfect. Always striking the most dramatic poses. Here is some of the inspriation images I put together for ideas. [...]

Speaking of photo ref, notice the elements I took from Freddie to add a little unique touch to the singer. The mic, and how he holds it. Not just a pack of hotdogs wrapped around a cylinder.

I approached this one kind of like another take on my original Ponder art. A zoomed out view. I even included subtle facial features in the background if you look closely.

I'm the artist for the new Solemn card and just thought I'd share some behind the scenes stuff with everyone here because I think it's interesting!

So, fun fact about my Solemn Simulacrum Image for Magic, I initially pitched it as being a recreation of the original card based on Jens Thoren likeness as an homage. I knew only a little about the Foundations set, but from the little I was told I took it as a new beginning for Magic. I wanted to represent the aftermath of the Phyrexian invasion and the opening of the multiverse and how we got here. Since Solemn was from original Mirrodin, I felt it was fitting to have our now justifiably sad robot emerge from an archway adorned with the story.

I wanted the image to feel like a breath of fresh air after a major catastrophe, like meeting an old friend, but under sad circumstances. I wanted it to be an image that represented magic's changes, but also its origins, since foundations sounded like the set to do that

After my painting was sent, it was requested that I change it as it was too close in likeness to the original. And I couldn't help but chuckle at that. In a very meta way, Wizards asking me to change this homage into something else felt like it fit this story even more. Just a story of an old friend being turned into a robot.
